Synthetic Animals in Synthetic Worlds

چکیده
Abstract This paper provides an overview of various research e orts that aim at designing adaptive animats i e synthetic animals able to survive in synthetic worlds The control architectures of these animats are either programmed by a human designer or more or less automatically determined by means of nature mimicking processes such as learning evolution and develop ment The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the directions in which future animat research should be oriented

Artificial Animals (and Humans): {F}rom Physics to Intelligence
The confluence of virtual reality and artificial life, an emerging discipline that spans the computational and biological sciences, has yielded synthetic worlds inhabited by realistic, artificial flora and fauna. Artificial animals are complex synthetic organisms that possess functional biomechanical bodies, sensors, and brains with locomotion, perception, behavior, learning, and cognition cent...
متن کاملRefraining Online Games
Massively-multiplayer online games, or “synthetic worlds,” represent a rapidly-growing industry with far-reaching social, technical, and economic implications. In this position paper, we draw on literature from anthropology, sociology, and film to challenge long-standing misconceptions of “games” and “work” and of “virtuality” and “reality” as dualisms that have obscured synthetic worlds from s...
متن کاملMaking Meaning in Computers: Synthetic Ethology Revisited
Synthetic ethology was developed as a methodology for constructing experiments in which artificial agents could exhibit real (i.e., not simulated) intentionality and other mental phenomena. This report has two purposes. The first is to review the motivations for synthetic ethology as an experimental methodology and to explain how it can be used to investigate intentionality and meaning, and the...
متن کاملRadioprotective and antioxidant potential of Tanacetum parthenium extract and synthetic parthenolide in Swiss albino mice exposed to electron beam irradiation
Background: The herb feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L., Asteraceae) has an ancient reputation as an effective anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-asthmatic agent. Parthenolide a gemacranolide-type sesquiterpene lactone is the major constituent of European feverfew. Materials and Methods: The present study was intended to evaluate the in vivo antioxidant potential and radioprotec...
متن کاملEngaging in a Conversation with Synthetic Characters Along the Virtuality Continuum
During the last decade research groups as well as a number of commercial software developers have started to deploy embodied conversational characters in the user interface especially in those application areas where a close emulation of multimodal human-human communication is needed. Most of these characters have one thing in common: In order to enter the user’s physical world, they need to be...
